Gospel of the Witches, by Charles G. Leland (Republished 1990 by Phoenix of Custer
WA). ISBN: 0919345107.
Synopsis: First published in 1890, this book is a classic, and the first printed
version of the Charge of the Goddess. Italian sorcery! It's one of my favorites. A
manuscript purported to have been given to American folklorist Charles Leland by a witch
named Madellena in her own handwriting. Contains many elements which were later adapted
into Gerald Gardner's book of shadows, including the nucleus for Valiente's "Charge
of the Goddess." Places Goddess as primary deity and popular with many Dianics.
- The Witch-cult in Western Europe, by Margaret a. Murray, 1921. Currently out of
Print.
Synopsis: In this popular work Egyptologist Margaret Murray examines the European
witch hunts as social history, conjecturing on the existence of a pre-Christian,

each season. Without any overt pagan sensibility, the book is about living the essence of
the pagan year wheel. I prefer this to the pagan books that focus only on the Sabbats.
