  • Dreaming the Dark: Magic, Sex & Politics by Starhawk [Miriam Simos], (Boston: Beacon Press, 1982). Second edition ISBN: 0807010251
Synopsis: Discussion of social and group dynamics from a strong perspective of eco-feminist activism. Stirring story on the modern mythology of "the burning times" in appendix. Starhawk pulls together a wide range of materials to answer this question in a book as beautifully poetic as her first. Some of these things have waited a long time to be said - and they couldn't have been said better!

Ethics, peer interaction, developing children's ritual, facing religious issues as a family and the demands of parenthood vs the pocketbook are all addressed. Most importantly, she includes a section on "Answering the Hard Questions" - how do we respond to questions on sexuality, death, discrimination? With well-thought-out, insightful answers (which can serve as a starting point for family discussions), this is a volume you will refer to over and over. We look forward to the next book by O'Gaea.
  • The Spell of Making by Blacksun, List: $12.50, Amazon Price: $10.00, You Save: $2.50 (20%), 192 pages, Eschaton Productions Inc., 1997, ISBN: 157353109X
Synopsis: The Spell of Making offers a practical guide to constructing meaningful ritual. All religions have their rituals, their ceremonies and rites. Most practitioners never question where and when their religion's particular liturgies originate, they are just "traditional." Some religions, however, do not have the luxury of long histories of open practice. Faiths such as Wicca are only now being celebrated publicly, and their priests and priestesses are faced with quandaries as to how to properly address situations needing appropriate rites where none exist. This book was written to address this need.

  • An ABC of Witchcraft', 'Natural Magick', Witchcraft for Tomorrow, and Witchcraft, A Craft Renewed, all by Doreen Valiente. Doreen Valiente is perhaps best known for her work with Gerald Gardner in creating the Gardnerian canon of liturgy. However, in her own books, she really shines as an amateur folklorist, managing to convey a sense of Witchcraft as a folk religion, tied very much to the locality, the land, and the oldest strains of folk wisdom and nature. Her sense of history and tradition is rich and deep, and she often presents fascinating historical tidbits about the Craft. From no other author can one gain such a rich sense of heritage. See below:

Synopsis: A one-volume compilation of two books: Eight Sabbats for Witches and The Witches' Way, respectively; also called A Witches' Bible, Vol 1 & 2. The first book is an examination of the festival Holidays of the Old Religion - the Solstices and Equinoxes and the cross-quarter days - together with the rich folk customs associated with them. The second book contains the long-awaited remainder of the previously unpublished portions of the Gardnerian Book of Shadows. In both of these books, the Farrars had the invaluable help of Doreen Valiente, who actually wrote parts of the Gardnerian liturgy. The three Farrar books taken together form the most complete system of Witchcraft currently available. Their more recent book The Witches' Goddess focuses on the feminine archetype, and contains a gazetteer of Goddesses that is mind-boggling in its thoroughness. Now out of print, the Farrars did not choose this title.

  • A Harvest of Festivals Marian Green (Element)
Synopsis: A examination of the folk customs and traditions current (or at least surviving until recently) in Britain. There is much material here to inspire, or suggest ideas for, rituals. It has fairly recently come back into print.
  • Witchcraft Today by Gerald B. Gardner, currently published by Citadel
Synopsis: Gerald Gardner has the distinction of being the first practicing Witch to write a book about Witchcraft. He was initiated into one of the surviving traditional British Covens, and onto the tattered remnants of magic and ritual inherited from them he grafted elements of ceremonial magic. The synthesis that emerged came to be called Gardnerian Witchcraft, and it became the major cause of the Witchcraft revival of the twentieth century. Because Gardner was the first to deal with this material in written form, it sometimes seems very disorganized, but its historical importance is immense.
