craft of the wise.
This is an
on-line source of free information about the old religion of Wales and Great Britain and
the craft of the wise. A Warm Welsh Welcome or "Croeso Cynnes Cymraeg!"
The Craft of the Wise or "Craft" is a label that is used today to
denote a form of the Craft, or Witchcraft, that was practised before Gerald Gardner
introduced modern Wicca to the world. As with Wicca, The Craft is primarily a religion.
Followers of Traditional Craft or the Craft of the Wise as a general rule call themselves
Crafters rather than Witches, although are happy with either label in a modern context. Of
course, nobody in their right mind would go about labeling themselves as a Witch a few
hundred years ago! To do so would quite possibly have been fatal and at the least make you
a social outcast. Often an uneasy truce would develop between the Wise Person and the
village. They were 'suffered' as long as they remained useful. The Wise Person would often
serve as doctor to the poor, councillor and (regrettably) scapegoat. It's worth bearing in
mind here not all Wise People were Witches (probably only a minority were in more recent
centuries), and that very few of the people convicted of Witchcraft were in fact Witches.
Some Crafters have a Book of Shadows passed down through their family. Others claim
everything was passed orally. Quite often the reason for there being no Book of
Shadows is cited as being due to the general illiteracy of the wise folk. Research will
however show a surprisingly high degree of literacy, probably as they would keep up to
date with contemporary herbalism etc. through pamphlet circulation. Probably the
lack of a Book of Shadows is due to other reasons - risk of discovery, the fact it is an
oral tradition, and much of it is only relevant to a given time or location.
As there are few written record, and little associated dogma, the Old Craft is a living
thing. It is infinitely adaptable to many cultures, many locations. There is evidence of
Old Craft practice in England that is over 8000 years old, and some evidence from the past
few years. You can prove parts as modern or ancient. This is as there is no one true
source for the Craft in it's current form - it draws from many places. On the practical
side, if it works then use it! The one thing that does not change is the underlying
religion. The imagery of the God and Goddess can be traced back with a continuous,
unbroken line into prehistory. From the shamanic cave drawing to the Horn Dance, from the
oldest Earth/Fertility Goddess to Bride.
One of the important features of the Old Craft of the Wise is it's awareness and closeness
to the Earth and Nature. It is created from the essence of the energy of the land at each
location, not from the lands of distant places. A Crafter respects other cultures, may
work with them, and learn their lessons, but the bond to their own location is stronger
than any other influence.
